reading filmart
it's amazing how these stage/backdrop designers have so much passion and enthusiasm for what they are doing. and it's infectious. it's simply amazing and exciting to see the image you always had in your mind while reading the fantasy novels/books realized. it may not be a space you may enter and explore by yourself, but you bring it to reality in film and share your opinions of the space imagined by the author with the large audience. it's taking a step to participate in the realisation process. there are times when you have read a book and when you see the realised movie, you are sorely disappointed (eg. harry potter). and looking at the lord of the rings, you are truly overwhelmed by the scenes and it makes you really enjoy the movie and the storyline. the stage and the lightings etc. contributes to the sense of loss/ danger/ hope/ relief you feel with the characers. the form of the space itself, the texture and the style. Form: warmth/ the sense of coziness from the scale of the space in relation to the occupant. eg. a rounded space that forms around the users. Texture: a rough irregular texture may represent a "primitivity". a sleek polished look may be easily associated with advanced technology, the future, or development. Style: the art deco style was very commonly used in the lord of the rings. perhaps its the familiarity that connects with the audience. as such the house may be recognised as a home. in dealing with man, familiarity appears to reflect a warmth of home or safety, in contrast to something unexperienced before, despite that the culture of this hypothetical race/ species might not have been thought to be represented in that way.
it's amazing how technology has enabled ir-reality to be realised on the screen. the overlap of photoshop layers, using miniature models, with a basic scene taken from a site. using lighting elements in photoshop to create different times of the day.
am reading the art of the fellowship of the ring. the trust and respect each member of the design staff have for each other is reflected in the film. i definitely need to learn from them.
fantasy and sci-fiction is simply exciting and an exercise for your imaginations.
try drawing/sketching it out. it's amazing how much detail your mind may expect and go into.
