Wednesday, May 23, 2007 star wars

i want to buy the dvds and special edition of the trilogy!

been reading The Art and Making of Star Wars (episode III) and others lying on my bookshelf...
Re-watched Episode III just now... it's quite sad that many parts were cut out or shortened otherwise the movie would be super long but this somewhat made the scenes super short and unable to truly appreciate the work gone into the production of the film.

Then i remembered comments on General Grevious' coughing (i suppose that's to let the audience know at first glance that Grevious' is part human-part droid) in 2005 (while watching the cinema screening at west mall) haha and how he hunches and how Mace Windu and Yoda looked so pro fighting using their laser swords.

Somehow it appears that the worst scene aka the most unbearable or the most upsetting or the tear-jerker was when betrayal occurred and how those who were innocent or didn't know anything were sacrificed. The scenes when Anakin slashed the hand of Mace and went on his rampage to the Jedi Temple and the clone troopers fired on the Jedi whom they were getting along with very well earlier upon receiving the command of Palpatine ('Execute Order Sixty-six'). of course this was coupled together with the wonderful music composed by john williams.

This year is the 30th anniversary of Star Wars! (dated from Star Wars: A New Hope in 1977)

Thursday, May 10, 2007 observations at JC CO SYF Central Judging

1. Central Judging translated into chinese = 中央评判

2. the morning session of the competition = 早上场

3. common mistake 1: too 爆的吊钹

4. common mistake 2: triangle is too loud (and blah blah) (ie. percussion too loud)

5. people start queuing up for the tickets at 1.15pm but the events people refused to hand it out before 1.45pm (but well i suppose those who expected it to be given out at 1.45 would be angry if it's given out before that. so well i shall accept that.)

6. i can't remember now. oh. one female conductor refused to move her feet off the stickers on the conducting podium throughout the whole performance for that particular JC. i wonder if her feet will get pins and needles (it's 10 mins!)

7. one should always sit up straight when playing da instrument.

8. i shall go bathe first. brb XD ok i'm back! -.- i might be quite mad today (i wonder why *looks around) oh. ms ding has piercing tall high heels!

9. it must be a fashion! that the yangqin 首席 likes to sit on the audience's right (aka near the 'traditional' 弹拨 side) (it should 'traditionally' be on the audience's left by the way) must be my influence! (yea right)

10. hcco and vjco are probably the only ones who buy their own uniforms (aka non-uniform uniforms)

11. i can't think of it now... shall include later if any.

Tuesday, May 08, 2007 Off Centre

an eye-catching leaflet (through its use of grey thick paper and distinct black figures for the front) for the play Off-Centre:

First staged in 1993 to critical acclaim, Off Centre is recognised as a landmark play in the history of Singapore theatre, best remembered for bringing mental illness and its patients' plight to the attention of the media and the general public in Singapore.

The play traces the friendship of Saloma and Vinod and the hurdles they have to overcome, including social stigmas, prejudices and personal conflicts.

Off Centre has also been selected by the Ministry of Education as the first Singapore play to be offered as a GCE 'O' Level literature text from 2007, and has been republished by The Necessary Stage.

Sunday, May 06, 2007 reading filmart

it's amazing how these stage/backdrop designers have so much passion and enthusiasm for what they are doing. and it's infectious. it's simply amazing and exciting to see the image you always had in your mind while reading the fantasy novels/books realized. it may not be a space you may enter and explore by yourself, but you bring it to reality in film and share your opinions of the space imagined by the author with the large audience. it's taking a step to participate in the realisation process. there are times when you have read a book and when you see the realised movie, you are sorely disappointed (eg. harry potter). and looking at the lord of the rings, you are truly overwhelmed by the scenes and it makes you really enjoy the movie and the storyline. the stage and the lightings etc. contributes to the sense of loss/ danger/ hope/ relief you feel with the characers. the form of the space itself, the texture and the style. Form: warmth/ the sense of coziness from the scale of the space in relation to the occupant. eg. a rounded space that forms around the users. Texture: a rough irregular texture may represent a "primitivity". a sleek polished look may be easily associated with advanced technology, the future, or development. Style: the art deco style was very commonly used in the lord of the rings. perhaps its the familiarity that connects with the audience. as such the house may be recognised as a home. in dealing with man, familiarity appears to reflect a warmth of home or safety, in contrast to something unexperienced before, despite that the culture of this hypothetical race/ species might not have been thought to be represented in that way.

it's amazing how technology has enabled ir-reality to be realised on the screen. the overlap of photoshop layers, using miniature models, with a basic scene taken from a site. using lighting elements in photoshop to create different times of the day.

am reading the art of the fellowship of the ring. the trust and respect each member of the design staff have for each other is reflected in the film. i definitely need to learn from them.
fantasy and sci-fiction is simply exciting and an exercise for your imaginations.
try drawing/sketching it out. it's amazing how much detail your mind may expect and go into.

与胡柄旭玩

which colour scheme seems more appropriate? what do u think of the idea? it's more of using simplee lines and shapes to emphasize the notion of play, like the word 玩 on the face (sort of like a tattoo, a merging of play and the conductor)

Do look forward to this concert! =D

Presented by hooxy and 静山空谷回音华乐团。

Wednesday, May 02, 2007 Get Fuzzy

Frank Llyod Wright (1867-1959) is an American architect most famous for FallingWater, a building with cantilevered levels built over a river near a waterfall.

"Form follows function" is a classic phrase coined by Louis Sullivan. another American architect and teacher of Wright. 顾名思义,it represents a belief that the appearance of a building/ space should be based on the function/ use of the building/ its elements, rather than as a decoration.
