space, beauty and freedom
what is space? some of my studio mates defined it as an area enclosed by 2 or more walls/objects. but then what is an open space? how about outer space? personally i believe that space is everywhere and anywhere. as we see it, it is an area that is not yet occupied by something. a place where air flows freely, somewhere you can move about. a fluid and everchanging area. true, an interior (enclosed by walls) is called a space. but perhaps the definition should not be limited to this scope in our context? (there are 24 different definitions for space at dictionary.com haha) in our context. maybe outer space is too far away haha.but i believe open space as a space. walls need not always be present. architecture is like the design of a space, how it is utilised and occupied. a building/structure does not start from a place with walls already present. the space where a design is to stand is defined by the boundaries as stated by the client. but this is if architecture is under the limits of clients, the users and regulating bodies. should practical architecture, or should i say architecture that should be applied to current and practical contexts, be the only ones under consideration in the field of architecture? yet, if there are no boundaries, the space where a design may be constructed does not really depend on the '2 walls' or something that so called defines the space. in an open field, the walls are inexistent.
what is beauty? beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. i do not think that something my studiomates and tutor said and emphasized as beautiful is beautiful. yes it looks neat with its clean lines and smooth surface. but i don't see anything special. maybe special is different from being beautiful. maybe i expect more from an object that is a result of the creative process. or do i look for something more then the appearance.
what is freedom? the ability to do whatever you want to do? are the animals in the zoo deprived of their freedom? is the animal born in the zoo deprived of freedom? like what my studio mate said: how can the animal understand the concept of freedom if it doesn't know what is freedom? (as defined by humans) how do you know that the animal is not given freedom if you do not speak its language? how well can u know the thoughts of the animals? whether through their actions/health conditions. if someone is happy, does he/she/it have freedom? why do you want the ability to do whtever you want to do? to make you happy? if that is so, then freedom could perhaps just be the power to be happy. is happiness the ultimate of life? is happiness the utopia? is there a need for 'freedom' if the animal is happy in the zoo?
my model on free expression.
the nails are coated with the plastic fuel line thing. the whole thing is a column of the zoo entrance. this model speaks of the changes experienced in the zoo with time. there are 24 strips on the base, each strip representing one hour of a day, starting from 0000hrs at the left. the vertical blocks in this top view represent the density of people around these three pillars in a strip. as can be seen, human flow starts from about 8am , increasing with time before decreasing exponentially after closing time which is 6pm. this is like a continuous film strip showing the change in space as seen by the narrowing of the spaces between columns as human traffic flow increases. this model also explores the movable/fluid and the immovable/permanent. the columns are somehow like humans themselves, all lonely in the
night, and filled in the day. in the front elevation, it can be observed that despite the high human traffic flow in the day, the vertical spatial experience is always present as the high columns always leave a void allowing the feeling of open space above the human heads. somehow the columns dwarf the humans. also of note is that although the columns are closely spaced in the measure of time, each column is rather far from each other in a strip. the arrangement of columns convey the sense of space in the zoo entrance. in this model, the comparative distances between columns (in the x and z axes) illustrate the spaces. isnt open/wide space/s relative? a hall is very spatial to humans, but a toilet is very spacious to a fly (if it can see that much distance). ur size determines the extent of the vastness of space as experienced perhaps?
the different materials of the columns and people also illustrate the difference between the movable and immovable, the fluid and permanent.
is the long explanation necessary? Richard Sapper's 'philosophy' is: the design should speak for itself. but this is not a functional design. so it shouldn't matter? now if i said this much/had this much time to talk during the presentation.................... haha
going to bangkok during mid-term break as part of archi field trip. (another studio is going to angkor wat!!!!!!! i want to go!!!) anybody wants anything? =D i'm not sure what to get since i've never been there haha. do let me know if you want/need anything.
