Wednesday, March 22, 2006 home for little pigeon

About Pigeons:
1. prefer to stay near the ground because they are scavengers
2. tend to get quite fat (due to the large amount of leftovers thrown by man)
thus, opening of house must be sufficiently large (ah well, even though the client is little pigeon, he/she may still grow)
=> collapsible/elastic entrance
3. Predators: cats/dogs (esp in cities)
=> door cannot be too big (esp since cats can squirm and flatten their bodies)
=> house not situated too close to the ground (cats can climb trees and jump very high)
4. Necessities: Food, water (from foraging)
: Warmth (dry grasses carpeting the inside of the house)
: Ample space (for preening, roosting, feeding of young and for mate)
: Keep out the elements (of nature)
=> colour- cream/white (does not trap heat)
=> stable structure (less susceptible to wind movements)
________________________________________________________________
As a result of these considerations, the structure below arose:

A bird is born from an egg, after several weeks of hard work of his/her mother, thus the egg symbolizes and reminds of the love and warmth a mother may give to her children. Similarly, this egg-shaped home may remind the little pigeon of a comfortable home to return to after each day's foraging.

The egg shape also supports the bottom of the pigeon with its curved bottom, providing the pigeon with maximum comfort.

The hanging column is inspired from the nests of the hummingbirds. It serves as a protection for the pigeon.

Tuesday, March 14, 2006 architecture

this is for me to collect my thoughts. haha.

Q: why do you choose architecture out of all the other courses out there?
A: i'm not an extremely -design- type of person, neither do i love science and formulas to bits, thus i opt for a course that merges the sciences with the design aspect, which i enjoy.

Q: they say that it's really tough you know, staying for long periods in the studios which are not exactly neat and inviting.
A: since i have not tried, how would i know? if i'm really doing something i like and enjoy, why would i bother with the long hours? after all, i wouldn't mind staying up late at night working on those tiny projects that bring me pride and joy.

Q: but you know you really need sleep leh.
A: yah that's really true. thus i have not taken up any tuitees! haha.

Q: but seriously, how can so simple a reason fix your mind so firmly on architecture?
A: eh let me see. i think i seriously thought about this in J2, or maybe end of J1. really wondering what course would interest me since i cannot study for the sake of it other than interest. anyway, who can? physics was starting to lose me there and i know my biology is not really that good. i don't really have much interest in chemistry too (it started from secondary school despite how the rest of the class seem to love chemistry). maths is really dry. my language is REally horrible as everybody can testify. then that leaves nothing. then i considered the alternatives. physics is not that bad (considering my grounding and Mr Chan(!) in ny) so since i AM interested in design related stuff, why not look for a combination of the two?

(i'm getting REALLY long-winded. and i'm losing the purpose i'm searching for.)

seriously. i think better on the train, when walking home, before i sleep, when i bathe. but definitely not when i finally decide to sit down and write down what i think.

buildings are really exciting you know. so many factors have to be taken into consideration before you can finally build it.
the soil it stands on determines its stability.
the atmosphere and wind conditions affect its stability too. whether the windows would break easily --> what type of materials to use (think punggol and the frequently-broken windows)
the height similarly.
the shape and texture.
the surrounding built-up environment. it affects whether it would be 'outstanding' and if it is more/less susceptible to environmental effects.
what beams?
what type of roof?
accessibility?
even more concerns if it' s meant for housing - environment, surrounding amenities, and lots more.
lastly comes the design. the design is nothing if it cannot stand.

Thursday, March 09, 2006 i'm tagged. -.-

aiya wanxin don't do that next time haha =P
to entertain you hehe:
5 weird things about me
1. i intend to make a mosaic out of posters on my wall
2. i spent my money buying singapore copies of JJ's CD
3. i love performing for concerts (that's not really weird imo)
4. i'm drawing during work
5. i went to the scanner dozens of times during work today to scan a picture i drew into the computer such that one of the managers (i think) was looking at me weirdly (cos he was sitting facing the path to the big powerful scanner)

i don't intend to tag people ('cos there are limited people for me to tag) so this is just for fun!
haha i think my work's quite fun ('cos i like to self-entertain haha), since i'm drawing in front of the computer, getting free muffins from the company (hehe they're quite nice! there's cheese, cranberry, banana n walnut, carrot and lots! from a small shop at tanjong pagar market.)

the busy period is going to start soon.... haha get more OT money and there's something for me to do FINALLY haha.

Saturday, March 04, 2006

i realise that the picture is slightly pixelated due to some enlargement in order to fill the screen. maybe i should try another image provider.
-xx-
today is perhaps one of the many days i really saw my brother smile at something that was not on the computer or the radio/mp3 he listens to. perhaps it's because of the gift of a lcd monitor for his daily computer usage. perhaps it's because he has a nice dinner. perhaps it's beacause of some external factors. perhaps it's because he's starting to change. i really hope so. change for the better.

oh yes. i would get to use the older lcd monitor (never mind that it's crystals are not as functional. it's still lcd. and much better than this blur screen). hehehe.

concert!

the concert was over yesterday, indeed, before i knew it. feeling quite bored now... like there's no more purpose...
after all, i'm used to the weekly routine (of being busy). it's really quite fun.
i'm not sure what the audience thought of the concert but personally, i thought it was okay bah. the solos were quite good, there were some mistakes for the orchestral pieces, but i think that overall, it's better than the rehearsal.
i'm getting lazy... my stuff are lying all over the place in no order (disorder).
give me more concerts!
(but selling tickets are no fun... all of you non-sympathetic souls out there =P)
(the banner design and etc are getting better haha... yesterday's was a nice hot pink with black lettering... very pretty haha, especially to all pink-lovers out there...) shall take a picture of the poster i have someday... i'm thinking of getting all the posters (A4 sized) and pasting it on my bedroom wall (collage neh)... it should be very colourful and pretty =D)
